England and Sunderland FC striker goes plant-based
Jermain Defoe has revealed that going vegan has been a key factor in his ability to stay fit and get back to his best. Before scoring on his return to the England squad against Lithuania last week, Defoe had not played a game for his national side since 2013. But after scoring 15 goals last season and another 14 (and counting) this season, Defoe got the call up and duly proved his manager right with his 20th international goal.
Going vegan is just one of the lifestyle changes that the 34-year-old has made to “look after” his body.
“That’s a funny one because when I go to my Mum’s she’s got every kind of meat you can imagine out on the table.
“It was my girlfriend’s idea. She said to me, ‘You’ve got to do it,’ and she’s always showing me these documentaries and that. It’s always nice to have someone around you to who helps you and drives you on and wants you to do well.”
David Haye and Williams sisters also plant-based
With other sports stars such as the Venus and Serena Williams and former heavyweight champion David Haye also realising the physiological benefits of a vegan diet, perhaps it won’t be long until a vegan lifestyle becomes the norm for top level sportsmen and women.
